My traditional massage is based upon the Swedish technique with many additions that I have incorporated over the course of my practice. My goal is to meet the needs of each individual client, whether for tension relief or deep tissue for pain. Clients who experience my massage state that it is one of the best they have had, and even those that have traveled world-wide give me rave reviews.

Do UV Sun Rays Go Through Windows?
The answer is yes!!
This is a really important issue for anyone sitting in direct sunlight that comes through a window. Normal glass blocks all of UVB but allows UVA to come through. Both of these rays are harmful. Remember:
UVB
- UVB is considered the main sunburn ray
- It causes skin cancer and sun damage
- The SPF in a sunscreen tells you how well the product protects you from UVB
UVB, the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn, tends to damage the skin’s more superficial epidermal layers. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and a contributory role in tanning and photoaging. Its intensity varies by season, location, and time of day. The most significant amount of UVB hits the U.S. between 10 AM and 4 PM from April to October. However, UVB rays can burn and damage your skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice, which bounce back up to 80 percent of the rays so that they hit the skin twice. UVB rays do not significantly penetrate glass. Protect yourself from UV radiation, both indoors and out. Always seek the shade outdoors, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. And since UVA penetrates glass, consider adding flat, tinted UV-protective film to your car’s side and rear windows as well as to house and business windows. This film blocks up to 99.9 percent of UV radiation and lets in up to 80 percent of visible light.
UVA
- Is the UV ray in tanning beds
- It penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB playing a big role in sun damage including wrinkles
- It can cause skin cancer
- The SPF on sunscreens tells you nothing about whether the product protects you from UVA. Look for sunscreens labeled ‘broad spectrum’.
Most of us are exposed to large amounts of UVA throughout our lifetime. UVA rays account for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. Although they are less intense than UVB, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent. They are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year, and can penetrate clouds and glass.
UVA, which penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB, has long been known to play a major part in skin aging and wrinkling (photoaging), but until recently scientists believed it did not cause significant damage in areas of the epidermis (outermost skin layer) where most skin cancers occur. Studies over the past two decades, however, show that UVA damages skin cells called keratinocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis, where most skin cancers occur. (Basal and squamous cells are types of keratinocytes.) UVA contributes to and may even initiate the development of skin cancers.
UVA is the dominant tanning ray, and we now know that tanning, whether outdoors or in a salon, causes cumulative damage over time. A tan results from injury to the skin’s DNA; the skin darkens in an imperfect attempt to prevent further DNA damage. These imperfections, or mutations, can lead to skin cancer.
Tanning booths primarily emit UVA. The high-pressure sunlamps used in tanning salons emit doses of UVA as much as 12 times that of the sun. Not surprisingly, people who use tanning salons are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma, and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. According to recent research, first exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75 percent.
Prevention Guidelines:
- Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
- Do not burn.
- Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
- Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Usa a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
- Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
- Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
- Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
- See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.
Do some sunscreen ingredients and products really work better than others?
A definite yes!!
Two ingredients favored are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They protect us over this broad range of ultraviolet A (UVA) and UVB. And these ingredients don’t tend to break down as easily as other sunscreen ingredients.
UVB rays cause sunburn and skin cancer; UVA rays cause aging and likely skin cancer. Because both cause damage to the skin. It’s important to pick a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection that shields out both types of rays.
Many active ingredients in sunscreens break down in the sun, wiping out protection. And some sunscreens only provide protection against ultraviolet B.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are classified by experts as physical blockers, which work by reflecting rays away from the skin. Other sunscreen ingredients, such as oxybenzone, are chemical blockers, which work by absorbing rays and preventing them from penetrating.
The physical blocking sunscreens are by far the better sunscreens vs. the chemical sunscreens.
There are currently 17 active ingredients approved by the FDA for use in sunscreens. These filters fall into two broad categories: chemical and physical. Most UV filters are chemical: They form a thin, protective film on the surface of the skin and absorb the UV radiation before it penetrates the skin. The physical sunscreens are insoluble particles that reflect UV away from the skin. Most sunscreens contain a mixture of chemical and physical active ingredients.

How to get rid of Blackheads
When I do facials I find that most people, no matter what their age, have blackheads, especially on their noses. Luckily there are a few different methods for getting rid of blackheads but persistence and patience is needed in order to see results.
What Are Blackheads?
Simply put blackheads form when sebum (oil) and dead skin cells clog the inside of the sebaceous (oil) glands and form a cyst. Blackheads are open comedones, the word doctors use for blackheads and whiteheads, which means that the dermis has not covered the clogged pore over, and the comdone oxidizes in the air and turns black. Just because the comedone is black does not mean that it is dirty or that there is dirt there. This type of blockage starts deep inside the pore and builds up until it reaches the surface. Blackheads typically grow to between 2 to 4 millimeters and can remain in place for months and even years.
What Causes Blackheads?
There are few different contributing factors to the formation of blackheads. One is that your body is producing excessive amounts of sebum or oil and that oil does not exit the pore properly. Another contributing factor are dead skin cells that also do not exit the pore properly – rather they stick together and get stuck in your pores. This, by the way, can be a genetic condition. Certain make-up and skincare products can contain ingredients that can contribute to clogged pores. Not removing all your make-up at night certainly doesn’t help to keep your pores clear of debris.
How Can You Get Rid of Blackheads?
Two things are important to remember about blackheads when you go to treat them. One is that the oil and dead skin cells that are blocking your pore and have lead to the formation of a blackhead have accumulated deep inside your pore so you need pretty powerful ingredients that penetrate deeply into pores in order to dislodge the stuck debris. Simply cleaning your face with a scrub or rubbing away at your blackheads will not help dislodge them since the debris is stuck deep down in your pore. Secondly, as I wrote above blackheads can stick around for months or even years which means that you need patience and persistence when you want to remove them.
The two best ingredients for getting rid of blackheads are salicylic acid and retinoids. Salicylic acid is oil soluble which means it can penetrate into your clogged pore and help to dissolve the oil trapped in the pore. Retinoids help to regulate skin cell turnover and prevent the dead skin cells from sticking together and staying in your pores. Many people might find it too strong to use products simultaneously with those ingredients so I would choose one or the other ingredient. But be sure to be patient! The blackheads formed over time and it will take time to remove them.
Should You Squeeze Your Blackheads?
It is extremely tempting to squeeze your blackheads, but if done improperly you can actually cause quite a bit of damage to your skin. Ideally if you want to get rid of blackheads go get a facial. During a facial the esthetician properly prepares your skin for extractions and then knows how much to squeeze and for how long. For instance, don’t go squeezing your skin for more than 10 minutes since that will just end up causing trauma to the skin in the end. If you insist of doing your own extractions at home I suggest doing them immediately after getting out of the shower and after having washed your face. Make sure your hands are cleans and wrap your fingers in clean tissues. Squeeze gently and don’t keep poking at your face for more than 10 minutes. If you can’t dislodge the contents of a clogged pore easily leave it alone! Pushing and pushing will just damage your skin. Finish your extractions by wiping your face with toner or witch hazel oil.

Q. What is a medical spa?
Technically, it means that a medical doctor is involved with the spa. Because the doctor is involved, we are able to offer medical/pharmaceutical grade products and equipment for services. The benefit to our client is that you will get faster results.
Q. How is “kai – the medical spa” different from the other medical spas or even other spas?
There are several factors:
- As the owner, I like to approach everything from the client/employee point of view. In other words, how do I want to be treated in that situation? I always try to put myself in that person’s shoes and then make decisions accordingly.
- Other places may take the vendor rep’s opinions and not actually test out the product. At Kai, we are constantly researching the products and machines out there. First of all, we do that to know if the product/equipment will really deliver what the company claims to deliver. Secondly, if it does provide results and I decide to bring it in, then I want my team to know what to expect because someone or several members of the team have tried it.
- Lastly, educating the public is a big focus of mine. So many people do not know what is true or false. I believe in educating people by offering complimentary consultations. Many times, people know what they want to look like, but do not necessarily know which services or products to use to achieve desired results. I do not feel like anyone should charge to help someone figure that out. Other ways we educate: lunch and learns; evening events that mix learning with wonderful appetizers, networking and wine; etc.
- I believe strongly in giving back and supporting your community. We donate to silent auctions of schools and charity organizations. For a complete listing, please see our charity section on our website: kaimedspa.com
Q. Grace, I am leaving in 2 days to go on a whirlwind romantic weekend and I want to look my best. Any suggestions on spa treatments that will make me look younger in such a short amount of time?
That is not much time, but there is plenty you can do. It really depends on your skin condition, but typically a microdermabrasion is usually a good place to start and see results. This is a breakthrough skin resurfacing treatment that leaves your skin feeling like a baby’s skin. It smoothes fine lines and lifts the dull skin giving you a younger more vibrant look with a warm rosy glow that lasts a full week. You can also do a customized airbrush tan for that “safe” and healthy glow.
Excellent Service and Massage!
